Spring Azaleas

Spring Azaleas
8 x 10
oil on canvas
I went to the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens with a great group of friends and fellow artists today to paint. The roses are really starting to put on a show as they are in my own garden but today I wanted to paint the azaleas which seemed to be at their peak. I liked the way this little sculpture was surrounded by the pink blossoms. These bushes were over six feet tall. This is quite an accomplishment  because our soil in this part of Texas is very alkaline and they like acidic soil. The weather was great for painting out and I think everyone was pleased with their paintings. Afterwards we went to lunch and then to my house for dessert. It was a very enjoyable morning and afternoon.

  1. I like this one Doug. You grouped the blossoms into a very interesting pattern. I'm learning it doesn't take much for your eye to see flowers. This painting proves you don't have to show every petal. The cool dark green works good too.

    Desert? Did someone say desert?

  4. Sounds like a great morning...we've got a way to go before our azaleas bloom here in Rhode Island. I love how you massed them for overall drama.

  5. Thank you all! Spring is such an inspirational time to be out painting, but the best thing is being out with friends.

  8. Lovely painting Doug. Sad I missed the paint out at the garden. I was in Fredericksburg visiting my son and family. They have a new baby girl. That makes 6 grandchildren now. Hope to see you soon.
